A Highlight of Commercial Timber Construction Projects in BC - March 12th 2021
At Nicola LogWorks, over the last 30+ years, we have built a solid reputation throughout BC as premier commercial log builders and timber construction specialists. We have been building log homes and timber structures, stairs, and architectural details for both residential and commercial timber and mass engineered wood projects at our production site in Merritt BC since 1989. Contact us today for a quote on helping bring your timber-frame commercial building to life. We can help develop your plans and advise you on what style of log or timber construction best fits your vision and budget.
Our entry into the arena of commercial construction began in earnest in 2011 when we were invited to consult on lifting and assembly strategies at UBC’s Earth Sciences Building (ESB). Many other unique and memorable projects have followed. Below are a few highlights.
UBC’s Earth Sciences Building
The ESB resides at the heart of the science precinct on UBC’s Vancouver campus. It is home to several departments designed to revitalize the student experience. We are proud of our contribution to this exquisite creation that was constructed sustainably to LEED Gold standards.
What began as an invitation for a brief consultation turned into a summer’s worth of work for the LogWorks crew and a team of colleagues. Together we were able to rescue the install of the building’s heavy timber components and help create the largest panelized wood building with the greatest application of cross-laminated timber in North America. When the contractor’s crew needed help, our specialized skills provided the expertise needed to successfully undertake the handling, rigging, and lifting of the mass-timber. A solid foundation in sophisticated 3-D modelling was an additional asset that LogWorks brought to the process.
TRU’s Brown Family House of Learning
The Brown Family House of Learning contains the Irving K. Barber British Columbia Centre as well as a coffee shop, classrooms, study spaces, an open-air computer lab, and more. It was built to strict green standards and brings the university that much is closer to becoming carbon neutral.
LogWorks was involved with survey and solution development, Glulam installation, and the fabrication and installation of log roof panels.
Wood Innovation Design Centre (WDIC)
The WDIC in Prince George, BC, showcases the beauty of value-added BC wood products and is home to the Master of Engineering in Integrated Wood Design program.
LogWorks undertook commercial heavy timber installations on the WDIC project in 2013, contributing to the completion of the then tallest contemporary wood building in North America.
Fort McMurray International Airport Expansion
The roof design of the expanded Fort McMurray Airport features one of the largest applications of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in North America. It is both visually stunning and designed to withstand the cold northern climate because of the thermal benefits of wood construction
Nicola LogWorks provided survey and solution development as well as the installation of both CLT and Glulam.
